Cliff is the eldest
of three children; He has a Brother and a sister. Cliff and his
Brother spent many hours "playing" well known songs when they
started out, Cliff was 14 at the time. Always preferring the sound
of the Bass, he'd heard the great Jack Bruce of Cream play, but
couldn't afford to buy a Bass, so ended up getting a second hand
Antoria Les Paul copy. Together they learnt a few chords and bits of
songs, but Cliff stuck with riffs and bass lines played at the lower
end of the instrument. They learnt Cream’s ‘Sunshine of your Love’,
also tracks by Deep purple, and Led Zeppelin. Most were only poor
imitations. All the while he was saving up money towards a proper
Bass.
The first real Bass was of course a Copy of the
Gibson EB3, al la
Jack Bruce. With this instrument he joined his first band ’St
Pepper’( A Beetles tribute band) who later became known as ‘Square
One’.....While playing with this band Cliff purchased his next real
quality Bass an Ibanez Artiste, Al la Stanley Clarke, another great
hero. This Bass can be seen in the Black and white picture of Square
One in the practice hall. During his time with Square one he used a
variety of amps, H & H, Marshall, and even a 200watt Simms Watts PA
amplifier. He learnt fast with this band, he was the new Guy, and in
those days the band played between 5 and 6 nights per week. He
played with these Guys for 2 years. That’s a lot of gigs! He left
them and was ready to settle down to married life, thinking he’d
never gig again he sold his gear……….Big mistake. Music was part of
him and he just had to play. So time to buy some new gear, and there
was a lot of gear over the years. Using Fender precisions and
Jazzes, a
Warwick thumb bass, finally having now settled on a Custom
built Manson Bass, a real all-rounder. As for the amps..... Most
note worthy was the
David Eden set up he used, it consisted of a 700 watt road
runner head and 2 x 10 XLT plus 1 x 15 XLT, which was one powerful
rig, but heavy. For his present set-up see the 'gear' page.
He has played with several other bands on his way to 'Blackrose';
this is the band with which he has the most success. Blackrose had a
CD published, called 'Heaven Scent', and a contract with an American
distribution company, with distribution deals in American and the
far East. Blackrose supported many bands including;
Big Country,
Leo Sayer,
UK Subs,
999,
The Damned, and
The Stranglers, during their 8 years together. They also played
many festivals; the biggest had a 50,000 Watt PA…With 18,000Watts of
fold back!. Big things were expected from this band, but, very sadly
things turned bad when the American distribution company wanted to
change the name of the band to Adrenalizer and the album from
'Heaven Scent', to 'Adrenalized'. Three quarters of the band didn’t
want it. So that was the start of the downward slope. There is a lot
more to this story ............

Cliff is at present in the process of recording
his own music. Also now gigging again, having joined a new band
called 'High tide'. This is Six piece band who play a mixture of
Classic Blues, Rock, and folk.
Cliff's influences include;
John Paul Jones,
Jack Bruce,
Jimmy Hendrix,
Santana,
Victor Wooten,
Stanley Clarke, and
Billy Sheehan. Who is a real nice Guy. |
